Control
Coordinated motion
An array of SmartMotors can be daisy-chained over RS232 or
linked by RS485 to coordinate motion and automate multi-axis
machines. You can control position, velocity, and acceleration
to within 32-bits of resolution to handle the most demanding
of applications.
Torque
and velocity control
Due to the SmartMotors low cost, it is an excellent
choice even for simple torque or velocity control. In Torque
Mode, the SmartMotor is a source of highly-controllable continuous
torque, completely independent of position. In Velocity Mode,
velocity is held to within a fraction of a percent. Velocity,
acceleration, and deceleration can be modified on-the-fly.
Encoder following and electronic gearing
The SmartMotor follows an external encoder with virtually
any gearing ratio that is configured in the application software.
While the motor is performing electronic gearing, it can also
run its internal program interpreter and talk to peripherals.
Alternatively, you can use an external encoder to increment
and decrement the internal 32-bit counter, to use later within
the application.
Real time motion parameter control
All motion parameters are accessible before, during, and after
any move. Position, velocity, acceleration, Kp, Kd, Ki, Kl,
Kv, Ka, and Kg can all be changed continuously during motion.
No stopping is necessary for perfect 32-bit profiling.
Stepper replacement and substitution
With SmartMotor, you can dramatically increase throughput
on machines that use traditional stepper or micro-stepper
motors by replacing existing stepper axes. You can also replace
the traditional drive-amplifier combination seamlessly by
routing step and direction signals from the existing motion
indexing system directly to the SmartMotor.
Cam
following
SmartMotor allows you to load a cam table for high speed cam
following with interpolation between table entries.
Networking
Multi-node networking
Multiple axes of up to 100 SmartMotors can be networked together
using RS485 adapters without the usual hassle of encoder and
drive cables. Additionally, you can connect all home and limit
sensors directly to the motors themselves, so cabling is reduced
to an unprecedented level of simplicity.
Device
connectivity
The SmartMotor has internal analog and digital Input/Output
and can also use the AniLink port to provide access to extended I/O. The SmartMotor supports RS232, RS485, ProfiBus,
DeviceNet, and AniLink protocols.
Intelligent
communications
You can use the SmartMotor's second RS485 port to communicate
with intelligent peripherals like MFCs, light curtains, bar
code readers, absolute encoders, or additional SmartMotors.
When you have configured baud rate, bit, and parity parameters
to your specifications, the SmartMotors can communicate with
virtually any serially addressable device!

Standards
CE certification
Most SmartMotors are CE certified. During the overall machine
certification process, this assurance can be a critical advantage.
Complete access to all diagnostics
You can access all input, output, and internal status information
through pre-defined variable names for program monitoring and
control. The diagnostic information is available for serial
polling as well, and includes such information as bus voltage,
internal temperature, and instantaneous current and input status.
You can program the SmartMotor to signal preventive warnings
or faults based on this gathered data. Or you can prompt an
operator to lubricate a ball screw, clear a jam, or perform
preventive maintenance before damage occurs and you lose productivity.
Battery
operation
SmartMotor electronics are CMOS and the amplifier is exceptionally
efficient, making it an excellent choice for battery or remote
operation.
Software
Support
Circular interpolation and contouring
Circular interpolation and contouring are now easy thanks
to the SmartMotors advanced communications format combined
with a new micro-interpolation function. Animatics provides
host drivers and CNC G-Code interface programs for the host
PC. Use either of Animatics two software applications
to perform linear, circular, even helical interpolation, including
M-Code support. This makes the SmartMotor perfect for applications
like milling, laser or water jet cutting, routing, and turning.
SmartMotors do it all without a cabinet full of controls or
an expensive, customized CRT.
Configuration duplication
The SmartMotors unique digital programming methodology
ensures that you can download and duplicate each systems
tuning and performance parameters exactly. Once you have created
a successful prototype, you can download the same data to
each motor and never tune a servo again, even in production.
Using Animatics motion control software, you can be assured
of consistent and precise performance and throughput from
machine #1 to machine #101.
Application
development using SMI 2.0
All SmartMotors come with a terminal program, a program editor,
and a source level debugger. You can install the software
from a CD-ROM or from the Animatics website.
To program your SmartMotor, simply write your code, test it,
and download it to the configured SmartMotor. When you reboot
your SmartMotor, your program goes to work. You can monitor
and modify system parameters in real time, all from one screen.
The Windows-based user interface comes with source code compatible
with a variety of different host and embedded applications
in BASIC and C programming languages.
